A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified information in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in China-made cars.
The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Defence Background
The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This broader security environment underscores the importance of robust measures and caution in every areas of official activities, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
