Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
